Trend Surge
Classifies the market as bullish, bearish or chop, using a threshold that adapts to each symbol rather than a fixed number.
Most trend tools rely on a fixed threshold, which means they behave differently on a seven hundred dollar index fund than on a twelve dollar stock. Trend Surge measures the separation between two moving averages against that symbol's own recent average separation, so one setting behaves consistently across instruments and timeframes.
The output is a state rather than a line to interpret: bullish, bearish or chop. Chop is the state that earns its place. Knowing there is no trend is what keeps trend entries out of a range, and most breakout methods perform badly in exactly the conditions this flags.
Candles and an optional moving average ribbon take the colour of the current state, with the ribbon's intensity scaling to the strength of the separation rather than showing the same shade regardless.
How to read it
- Use it as context for entries generated elsewhere rather than as a signal in itself.
- Chop is a filter. Standing aside during it is the point of having it.
- Lower the chop sensitivity to call trends sooner, raise it to demand stronger separation first.
Questions
How does this differ from a moving average cross?
A cross is binary and fires repeatedly inside a range. This measures how separated the averages are relative to what is normal for the symbol.
Does it lag?
Every trend measure lags. The state updates on closed bars, so it does not rewrite history.
