ATR stop calculator
Place a stop at a multiple of average true range, so the distance fits the symbol's own volatility.
A stop placed at a round dollar amount means something different on every symbol and in every volatility regime. A stop placed at a multiple of average true range means the same thing everywhere: far enough away that ordinary movement does not reach it.
Enter the ATR from your chart, choose a multiple, and the calculator returns the stop price and the size that keeps the loss at your intended risk.
Notes
- One to two ATR is the usual range. Below one, ordinary noise takes you out.
- Read ATR from the timeframe you are trading, not from the daily chart, unless you intend to hold for days.
- The same multiple gives a wider stop when volatility rises, which is the behaviour you want.
